UNESCO World Heritage

Be enchanted by the "Venice of the North" with its picturesque setting of winding canals and charming alleys.

Did you know that the historic center of Bruges has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site? This prestigious status highlights the cultural and historical significance of the city. Stroll through the cobbled streets and admire the well-preserved medieval architecture that makes Bruges so special.

A visit to Bruges is a wonderful voyage of discovery. There are so many beautiful sights. Here are some iconic sights not to be missed:

The Grand Place (Market) and the Belfry

The beating heart of Bruges is the Market Square, surrounded by colourful facades and historic buildings. Here you’ll find the impressive Belfry, an 83-meter-high tower with an impressive carillon built in the 13th century. Climb the 366 steps for a breathtaking view over the city. The Market Square is also the ideal place to enjoy a Belgian beer on one of the cozy terraces.

The Burg

For centuries the power center of the city. Even today, Bruges is governed from the 14th-century City Hall. A majestic square with buildings that bring the history of the city to life: Here, you can admire the oldest parish church – the St. Salvator’s Cathedral – as well as the City Hall, one of the oldest in the Low Countries. Next to the City Hall lies the Basilica of the Holy Blood, where the relic of the Holy Blood is kept. With its colourful stained glass windows and intricate decorations, the chapel is a work of art in itself.

Opposite the City Hall, the Poortersloge proudly stands, once the meeting point of wealthy merchants and a reminder of Bruges’ importance as a trading city in the Middle Ages.

Also on this square is the Brugse Vrije, a beautiful Renaissance building that once served as Bruges’ courthouse and is now a museum about the city's history.

The Canals

A visit to Bruges is not complete without a boat trip on its scenic canals. Sail past medieval warehouses, picturesque bridges, and hidden gardens. The canals of Bruges offer a unique perspective of the city and allow you to discover hidden treasures that you might miss on foot.

The Beguinage

The Beguinage, an oasis of tranquility in the middle of the city. This historic site, founded in 1245, offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the beguines: devout single women who lived here together. Stroll through the idyllic garden and admire the white facades of the houses that surround the courtyard. A visit to the Beguinage feels like a step back in time.

The Minnewater Park

For a moment of relaxation, visit the fairytale-like Minnewater Park. Once, the Minnewater was a dock where ships from far and wide moored, bringing wool, wine, spices, and silk to the city. Today, the idyllic Minnewater with its graceful swans is the ideal place for a peaceful walk or a cozy picnic. The city seems far away here.

The Groeninge Museum

Art lovers shouldn't miss the Groeninge Museum. This museum offers an extensive collection of Flemish Primitives, with works by Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling, among others. It is one of the finest collections in the world. But there’s much more to see, including masterpieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods and works by Flemish Expressionists.

Our Lady's Church Museum

The Church of Our Lady holds a wealth of religious art, with Michelangelo’s world-famous Madonna and Child as its highlight. Also admire the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold. And don’t forget to look up: at 115.5 meters, this brick tower is the second tallest in the world!

The Rozenhoedkaai

Don’t forget: the Instagrammable hotspot of Bruges! Once a place to buy rosary beads, today it offers one of the most beautiful city views.

Concert Hall Bruges

This striking building with its clean lines and red brick facade has been a modern addition to historic Bruges since 2002.

The program of this cultural temple offers something for everyone: from classical music to jazz and contemporary dance and theatre.

A visit to the Concert Hall is not complete without a walk on the rooftop terrace. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Bruges and its stunning skyline.
